Deaf President Now Unit

*This lesson was developed by Sarah Baughman, a Masters student at Boise State University and links to an external source.

This unit focuses on the historical event that caused a ripple in the Deaf community, Deaf President Now. The unit includes three lessons, three projects, and a lot of fun!

Deaf President Now Lesson One: Social Studies - The What, Where, and When of Deaf President Now

In this lesson students will use the primary sources embedded/linked to research the What, Where and When of Deaf President Now. Using the information they discover about this event they will create an interactive timeline using Google Maps to show Where this event happened, When it happened, and What it was about.

Deaf President Now Lesson Two: Art/Music/PE - Seeing Deaf President Now from a different perspective

In this lesson students will review what they have learned about deaf culture in order to take on the identity/perspective of a deaf community member. They will then create a Glog that demonstrates their perspective, as that deaf community member, on Deaf President Now. The identity/perspective options that they can take on are: Deaf person, deaf person, hard-of-hearing person, teacher, sibling or parent of a deaf student at Gallaudet, interpreter, etc. If students have a different idea of a perspective they would like to take, you can contact Sarah for approval/guidance.

Deaf President Now Lesson Three: Language Arts - Preserving the Deaf Perspective

In this lesson students will review all of the information they have learned thus far and use it to write an ebook. This ebook will be written from the identity they chose in the last lesson and will outline their perspective, day by day, of Deaf President Now.
