This lesson, based on the book "We Want to Go to School!" tells the story of the IDEA.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was signed into law by President Gerald Ford on November 29, 1975, and its anniversary is celebrated on that date. The law was originally called the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142), but was renamed in 1990.

Using the book “We Want to Go to School! The Fight for Disability Rights” students will learn about the segregation of students with disabilities in the school setting. They will learn about the barriers that prevented students from attending school and the progression and processes to challenge and remove those barriers.
